Emerged: Christian Carey gives Composition Recital in Princeton
On September 28 in Princeton Junction, New Jersey, Christian Carey presents the first opportunity to hear an entire program of his contemporary classical offerings. Performers across the United States and Europe have performed Carey’s music, and Emerged features a decade’s worth of Carey compositions performed by many of their most dedicated interpreters.
“The program’s title is a bit tongue in cheek. So many experienced composers are labeled ‘emerging’ today: It can give the impression that their music isn’t fully developed, and that their careers aren’t either! When you hit 35 or 40, you are no longer eligible for many of the opportunities for ‘emerging’ composers. I’m forty this October. While, ‘post-emergence,’ I hope that my music continues to evolve and grow, Emerged celebrates where things stand today.”

Carey (b. 1973) has written contemporary classical music for a variety of forces, ranging from the expected – flute & piano duo, voices, and chorus – to the unusual: singing cellist, prepared piano and ensemble, drum set (using only brushes), and even orchestra with live locomotive. The eclectic nature of his music extends beyond scoring to style, incorporating influences as diverse as abstract expressionist art, modern jazz, and postmodern poetry. He is an Assistant Professor of Music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. He serves on the Board of Directors of the League of Composers/ISCM and as Managing Editor of the contemporary classical website Sequenza 21 (www.sequenza21.com/carey).
The new music specialists performing on Emerged include: Righteous Girls (flutist Gina Izzo and pianist Erika Dohi), the mixed chamber ensemble loadbang (baritone Jeffrey Gavett, bass clarinetist Carlos Cordeiro, trumpeter Andrew Kozar, and trombonist Will Lang), percussionist Peter Jarvis, soprano Sara Noble, mezzo-soprano Megan Ihnen, pianist Carl Patrick Bolleia, violist Zheng Yuan, and cellist Natalie Spehar.
Emerged will feature a world premiere of Solo for Piano (2013), commissioned and performed by Dohi. Jarvis performs Fuller Brush Music, the aforementioned drum set piece. For Milton, a composition in memory of longtime Princeton resident, composer Milton Babbitt (1916-2011), will feature Righteous Girls. Vocalist Ihnen will join forces with string players to present settings of poems by W.B. Yeats and Jane Kenyon. Loadbang will perform “Prayer,” a setting of a poem by Joanie Mackowski. Noble and Bolleia will revisit pieces originally written for Montclair Art Museum’s acclaimed “Pictures” concert series.
