“From Blue Symphony” receives its premiere tonight at Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey.
“From Blue Symphony” is a text taken from a longer poem by John Gould Fletcher. Published in 1913, it is from one of several collections of his work that have been associated with the Imagist poets. I found Fletcher’s evocative use of coloristic imagery and experiments with abstraction to share an affinity with some of the concerns explored by Manniere Dawson in his 1913 painting “Wharf Under Mountain.” In my setting, I tried to emulate their respective interests in interplay of color (harmony), images (gesture), and abstraction (melodic angularity). The song was composed in May 2013 in South Amboy, NJ and is dedicated to soprano Sara Noble, its first interpreter.
